Government unveils energy strategy

The government has unveiled a new strategy to increase the amount of renewable energy produced in the UK.

John Hutton, the UK's business secretary, revealed the new proposals, which include plans to introduce an incentive system to encourage households and businesses to generate green power.

New financial support for the installation of microgeneration technology has also been proposed, with incentives possibly coming through a feed-in tariff.

Mr Hutton said the expansion of renewable energy signals is "an important moment" in the UK's effort to introduce new low carbon technologies.

"We must make the most rapid progress possible to becoming a cleaner, greener economy and we will strive to make these changes in the most effective way possible, with the least cost to consumers," he added.

Details about the new measures have been published after the Carbon Trust launched a new standard to recognise businesses that have worked to improve their environmental impact.

Tom Delay, chief executive of the organisation, said the certification would provide firms with a "credible way" to prove their green credentials.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18658755-ADNFCR
